How to Measure Mayer Rod Life

Based on our experience, the best ways to measure metering rod life are tracking individual mayer rods and using an in‑line measurement system.

Individual Rod Tracking

Keep a production log for every rod. This method is highly accurate, but requires consistent record‑keeping.

Every Buschman rod has a unique serial number. You can link this number to its usage history.

For example, if the average life is 50,000 linear meters, you can track usage in a spreadsheet. At 25,000 meters, the rod is roughly 50% worn.

Note: This assumes use on one product type with fixed width and coating settings.

In‑Line Coating Measurement

An in‑line coat weight system is arguably the best monitoring method. Modern systems are advanced and can alert you immediately when coating volume drops.

Continuous monitoring also brings other key benefits:

  • Early detection of issues such as uneven coating
  • Easy integration with quality management systems
  • Lower coating costs by spotting over‑application in real time
