Mayer rods apply coatings to paper, film, foil and other substrates.
A key challenge for coating operators is tracking rod service life. The aim is to use rods efficiently and replace them in time to prevent quality problems.
Rods are normally retired when:
- Coating volume falls below requirements
- The coating is no longer smooth or even
Standards vary by use case, but you can check performance in several common ways:
- Direct measurement of coating weight
- Production data tracking
- Brightness testing
- Opacity testing
- Visual inspection of coating quality
- Functional tests (e.g. Cobb test, MVTR cup test)
Whatever method you use to spot under‑performance — what most operators call “wear” — you should distinguish between the two main causes: physical wear and contamination.
Identifying the cause helps you and your supplier choose the best measures to maximise rod performance and final product quality.
